A decorated army veteran was reduced to tears during an emotional television appearance after revealing how his local council demanded nearly £5,000 for garden maintenance work he never requested.
Kenny Thomson, who served his country for 24 years including tours in Northern Ireland, appeared on Channel 5's 'The Jeremy Vine Show' where he broke down while describing the "never-ending nightmare" created by Edinburgh City Council.
The Shocking Demand
The former soldier received an invoice for £4,736.77 for landscaping work at his property - maintenance he insists he never asked for or authorised. "I came home one day and they'd done the work," Kenny explained, his voice cracking with emotion. "I didn't ask for it. I didn't want it."
Despite his protests, the council continued to pursue payment, sending multiple letters and escalating the matter to the terrifying prospect of losing his home.
Television Breakdown
During his appearance on national television, the stress of the situation became too much for the veteran. "I'm sorry," Kenny wept, wiping tears from his eyes as host Jeremy Vine and fellow guests watched in sympathy.
Fellow panelist and journalist Carole Malone responded with outrage, declaring: "This is an absolute scandal. This man served his country for 24 years and this is how we treat him?"
Public Outcry and Support
Since his television appearance, Kenny has received overwhelming support from the public and fellow veterans. The case has highlighted what many see as unfair treatment of those who have served their country.
"I've had messages from people all over the country," Kenny revealed. "It's been incredible but shouldn't be necessary."
Council Response
Edinburgh City Council has since stated they are "reviewing the case" following the national attention. A spokesperson mentioned they take "all cases seriously" and are working to resolve the matter.
However, for Kenny, the emotional toll has already been paid. "I served my country with pride," he stated. "To be treated like this by my own council is heartbreaking."
