A married couple discovered dead at a remote cottage in Renfrewshire have been identified locally as Jim Mair, 43, and Stacy Mair, 35.
Police investigation ongoing
Emergency services found the pair at Corsliehill Road in Houston, Johnstone, on Monday morning, 27 July, after concerns were raised about an individual's welfare. Police Scotland said the deaths are being treated as unexplained, with post-mortem examinations to be carried out.
Detectives are conducting extensive enquiries to establish the full circumstances, but officers have stated there is currently nothing to suggest any third-party involvement. The couple's relatives have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
Background of the couple
The couple married in May 2019 and ran a tree surgery business together. Stacy Mair stepped down as a director of the business earlier this year.
Photographs from the scene show numerous police vehicles stationed outside a property in Houston and a neighbouring road. Officers are visible near the cottage, with vans positioned in an adjoining field and searching surrounding woodland.
Emergency services response
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "An investigation is ongoing into the deaths of a 36-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man in the Houston area. Around 7.50am on Monday, 27 July, 2026, we received a report of concern for a person in Corsliehill Road. Emergency services attended, and the body of a man and a woman were found nearby. The deaths are being treated as unexplained and post mortem examinations will be carried out in due course. Extensive enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances. At this time, there is nothing to suggest anyone else has been involved. Their relatives are aware and are being supported by specialist officers."
The Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed it received a call at 8.33am and dispatched four special operations response teams, two ambulances and a critical care team to the location. A spokesperson said: "We received a call at 08.33 to attend an incident on Barochan Road, Houston, Johnstone. Four special operations response teams (SORT), two ambulances and one critical care team were dispatched to the scene."
Corsliehill Road is a narrow country lane surrounded by agricultural land and a small number of remote properties, with minimal passing traffic. A substantial emergency services presence was reported, including a police helicopter on Monday.
