The Pentagon has announced that General Randy George, the US Army’s top officer, is retiring effective immediately as chief of staff. The move comes after Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly requested his removal.
George, the 41st Army chief of staff, was nominated by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate in 2023, a role typically held for four years. He previously served as senior military assistant to former Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin.
The Pentagon also confirmed the removal of General David Hodne and Major General William Green Jr, who led the army’s transformation and chaplain corps respectively. Hegseth has dismissed over a dozen senior officers since taking office.
George’s departure could escalate tensions between Hegseth and army leadership. The defence secretary has faced scandals, including allegations of mishandling classified intelligence and war crimes. Hegseth has also reportedly blocked promotions for two women and two Black officers, citing opposition to diversity initiatives.
