A group of blacksmiths from north-east England are using their skills to support Ukrainian soldiers by forging metal equipment for the front lines.
Hammer and Hound forge in Blyth has been tasked with producing 500 'log dogs' – large steel staples used to reinforce trenches. Local companies have donated gas, coal and steel to support the effort.
Forge owner Mr Sowden said an international community of blacksmiths had been aiding Ukraine since the war began in February 2022. 'Ukrainian blacksmiths were doing what they can to support the front lines,' he explained. 'Their skillset is in making stuff, so they're making offensive and defensive equipment.'
The log dog, described as 'basically a massive staple', is used to connect logs in trenches, saving time on intricate carpentry. 'I don't want to help a war, but if I'm going to do it, I'm going to make defensive equipment,' Mr Sowden added.
The forging session was a one-off, but Mr Sowden plans to offer further support if needed in the future.
