Ukraine Warns of Humanitarian Catastrophe After Russian Energy Strikes
Ukraine faces catastrophe after Russian energy attacks

Ukraine is facing warnings of a humanitarian catastrophe following a brutal wave of overnight Russian strikes targeting the country's critical energy infrastructure.

Infrastructure Attacks Amid Bitter Cold

With temperatures plummeting well below freezing across southern and southeastern regions, the attacks have caused potentially lethal disruptions to heating, electricity, and water supplies. Officials fear much of the country will endure temperatures dropping to below minus eight degrees Celsius in the coming days.

In cities like Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro, residents are being forced to seek refuge in emergency "resilience centres" – heated tents offering warmth, water, and charging stations. Mykola Lukashuk, head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council, warned there is currently no timeline for restoring power in the worst-hit areas and urged people to stockpile water.

Lieutenant Andriy Kovalenko of Ukraine's Centre for Countering Disinformation condemned the assaults, stating: "This is intentional terror against civilians and an attempt to create a humanitarian catastrophe."

Diplomatic Tensions and Western Troop Warnings

The crisis unfolds against a backdrop of heightened diplomatic friction. On Thursday, Russia reiterated its stance that Western military forces in Ukraine are "legitimate targets." Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova issued the warning days after the UK and France signed a declaration of intent to potentially deploy a multinational force to guarantee Ukraine's security.

Zakharova characterised the agreement between UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron as a "new militaristic declaration." She stated that any deployment of foreign military units or infrastructure in Ukraine would be classified as an intervention.

Thwarted False-Flag Plot Alleged

In a separate but alarming development, Kyiv's Foreign Intelligence Service (SZRU) issued a rare public statement claiming to have exposed a Russian plan for a mass casualty false-flag operation. The intelligence suggested the Kremlin planned an "armed provocation" against an Orthodox Christian church, either within Russia or occupied Ukrainian territory, intending to blame Ukraine for the resulting civilian deaths.

The SZRU indicated the attack was timed to coincide with the aftermath of Orthodox Christmas celebrations and target a "site of high symbolic significance." While it is believed the plan was thwarted after being exposed in local press, officials warned such a provocation could still be attempted in the future.

Meanwhile, Ukraine continues its campaign targeting Russian oil supplies and refineries, aiming to disrupt the Kremlin's war finances, which are heavily reliant on energy sales.
