Police forces in the UK are trialling the world's first roadside breathalyser designed to detect laughing gas (nitrous oxide), in a bid to combat the 'emerging threat' of motorists driving under its influence.
Trials Underway
The device is currently being tested by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and Thames Valley Police. Developed by Respira Technologies, the portable breathalyser can detect nitrous oxide inhalation for up to two hours, providing results within minutes.
Nitrous oxide is a Class C drug, and unlawful possession can lead to a two-year prison sentence. Its use poses significant health risks, including unconsciousness, neurological damage, or death, and has been linked to fatal road accidents.
Addressing Enforcement Challenges
Police forces are leading this testing phase to overcome current challenges in prosecuting drivers for inhaling laughing gas. The technology has the potential for wider national deployment if the trials prove successful.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: 'This innovative device will help us tackle the dangers of nitrous oxide use behind the wheel, making our roads safer for everyone.'
The trials come after a tragic incident where a teenager inhaled laughing gas at the wheel before crashing into and seriously injuring a pedestrian.
