UK Minister Denies Iran Targeting European Capitals

UK Minister Rejects Claims Iran Is Targeting European Capitals

A senior Cabinet minister has firmly stated that there is no intelligence assessment indicating Iran is targeting the United Kingdom or other European capitals. This declaration comes in response to recent warnings from Israel about Tehran's development of long-range missiles capable of reaching major cities across Europe.

Israeli Warnings and Missile Capabilities

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) posted on social media platform X, revealing that Iran has launched a long-range missile with a range of approximately 4,000 kilometres for the first time since the start of Operation Roaring Lion. According to the IDF, this missile poses a significant threat to dozens of countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa, with the potential to reach cities such as London, Paris, and Berlin.

The IDF emphasised: "We have been saying it: The Iranian terrorist regime poses a global threat. Now, with missiles that can reach London, Paris or Berlin." However, the Iranian regime has denied these claims, adding to the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.

Government Response and Reassurances

Housing Secretary Steve Reed addressed these concerns directly, asserting that there is no specific assessment suggesting Iran is targeting the UK. He stated, "There is no specific assessment the Iranians are targeting the UK - or even could if they wanted to." Reed highlighted the UK's military prowess, noting, "We have the finest military in the world, we are perfectly capable of protecting this country and keeping this country - whether it's here at home or whether it's our assets and nationals across the region."

When pressed further on Israel's warnings about Iran's missile capabilities, Reed added, "Not aware of any assessments at all that they are even trying to target Europe - let alone that they could if they tried. But even if they did we have the necessary military capability to defend this country." He also stressed that the government would not be drawn into the conflict, stating, "Whatever people say, we will not be dragged into this war."

Fuel Supply and Contingency Plans

In addition to addressing security concerns, Reed discussed the impact of the ongoing Middle East war on fuel supplies. He assured the public that there is no need for fuel rationing at this time. "There's no need to ration fuel. People should go around and buy their fuel just like they always would," he told Sky News.

Reed explained that the government has contingency plans in place should the situation change. He referenced previous interventions, such as when heating oil prices escalated dramatically. "We did intervene when it came to heating oil, because we saw the prices escalating and people were seeing their bills doubling and tripling overnight. We can't have that, so we stepped in to support people," he said, underscoring the government's readiness to act if necessary.

This stance aims to provide reassurance amid rising tensions and potential disruptions, ensuring that both national security and domestic stability are maintained.
