In a brutal overnight escalation, Russian forces launched a massive combined assault on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, unleashing a hail of missiles and explosive drones that shattered apartment blocks and left a trail of destruction.
The onslaught, one of the largest in recent weeks, wounded at least 53 people, including six children, according to local officials. Emergency services worked tirelessly through the night, battling fires and pulling survivors from the rubble of devastated residential areas.
Among the targets struck was the historic building that once housed the British Council, a stark symbol of Ukraine's ties to the West. While the organisation had long since vacated the premises, the attack was widely interpreted as a calculated political statement.
UK Issues Stern Condemnation
The United Kingdom responded with forceful condemnation. A Foreign Office spokesman denounced the strikes, stating: "Russia’s callous targeting of a building which once belonged to the British Council in Kyiv is a despicable and cynical move."
The statement reaffirmed Britain's unwavering support, adding: "We remain resolute in our support for Ukraine and will help them to rebuild and recover for as long as it takes."
Zelensky's Plea for Enhanced Air Defences
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated his urgent plea for more advanced air defence systems from Western allies. In a direct address to the world, he emphasised that such weapons are crucial not merely as military tools but as vital shields to protect innocent lives from relentless terror from the skies.
The attack underscores the critical need for continued international military and humanitarian aid as Ukraine braces for a difficult winter under the constant threat of aerial bombardment.
