Ukrainian forces successfully repelled a significant overnight drone assault by Russia, targeting critical energy infrastructure in central Ukraine. The attack, which utilised a wave of Iranian-made Shahed drones, focused on the strategically vital Kremenchuk oil refinery in the Poltava region.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, their air defence units were active and engaged the incoming threats. While the full extent of the damage is being assessed, regional authorities have confirmed that the attack resulted in a fire at the refinery complex. Emergency services were swiftly deployed to the scene to contain the blaze.
Strategic Target Under Fire
The Kremenchuk facility is one of Ukraine's most important oil processing plants and has been a repeated target for Russian strikes throughout the ongoing invasion. Its disruption poses a significant challenge to Ukraine's domestic fuel supply and economic stability.
"The enemy is again trying to inflict damage on our critical infrastructure and industrial facilities," a spokesperson for the regional military administration stated.
Air Defences in Action
Preliminary reports from the Ukrainian military indicate a high success rate for their air defence systems during the engagement. Official figures confirm the destruction of a number of the incoming Shahed-136/131 drones, though the precise number intercepted has not been fully disclosed.
This latest attack underscores the continued reliance of Russian forces on long-range drone and missile strikes to target Ukrainian energy and industrial capacity far from the front lines.
