Power has been restored to 270,000 consumers in Kyiv after a massive Russian overnight attack knocked out electricity across the Ukrainian capital, Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk announced on Friday. The attack, which targeted Ukraine's energy sector, involved over 450 drones and 30 missiles, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Kyiv residents reported hearing blasts throughout the night, and many woke up without power. Hrynchuk did not specify the total number of consumers affected. Zelenskyy said power outages occurred across nine regions and reiterated the need for international partners to provide air defence systems and enforce sanctions against Russia.
In the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, Russian drones and missiles damaged 12 apartment buildings, killing a seven-year-old boy and injuring four others, the regional governor reported. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 12 people were injured in the capital, with eight hospitalised.
The attack is part of a sustained Russian campaign against Ukraine's energy infrastructure as winter approaches. Zelenskyy has repeatedly called for more air defence support from allies to protect critical infrastructure.
