Three Royal Navy personnel have died after a Merlin Mk4 helicopter crashed during a training exercise in Devon, the Ministry of Defence confirmed. The incident occurred near Sourton Down, Okehampton, at approximately 4am on Wednesday.
Emergency services attended the scene, and an investigation has been launched. The head of the Navy, General Sir Gwyn Jenkins, expressed deep sadness and offered condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the deceased. He thanked Devon and Cornwall Police and search and rescue teams for their response.
The MoD stated that the families have been informed and have requested a period of grace before further details are released. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the deaths as “utterly tragic,” while Defence Secretary John Healey said he was “devastated” by the loss. The King, who served in the Royal Navy, is aware of the incident and is expected to offer private condolences.
The Princess of Wales, Commodore-in-Chief of the Fleet Air Arm, said she and Prince William hold the families in their hearts. The crash site is near Okehampton battle camp, used for training Merlin crew from the commando helicopter force. A witness reported hearing engines cut out before seeing a red flash and an explosion.
