Russia launched a major attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region on Sunday, using its hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile for the third time in the conflict. The assault killed at least four people and injured around 100, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The attack hit a water supply facility, burned down a market, and damaged dozens of residential buildings and several schools. In Kyiv, two people were killed and 56 wounded, said Mayor Vitali Klitschko, with damage recorded in every district. A school and a business centre were also struck, causing a fire and trapping people in a shelter.
Russia's defence ministry confirmed using the Oreshnik missile, which can carry nuclear or conventional warheads, along with Iskander, Kinzhal, and Zircon missiles. It said the attack was retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on civilian facilities in Russian territory. Zelenskyy described the assault as a 'heavy attack' involving 600 drones and 90 missiles, 36 of them ballistic.
The Ukrainian foreign ministry was damaged for the first time since World War Two, and the National Art Museum also suffered damage, though its collection was unharmed. Ukraine's government headquarters had windows blown out but no casualties. Residents described the attack as the worst of the war, with one saying, 'My job is gone, everything is gone, everything has burned down.'
