A 64-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly impersonating a highly decorated naval officer at a Remembrance Sunday event in Llandudno, Clwyd. North Wales Police confirmed the arrest on Friday, following reports that the man attended the service on 9 November wearing the uniform of a rear admiral, complete with medals including the Distinguished Service Order (DSO).
The man reportedly arrived unannounced at the town's war memorial, laid a wreath, and stood alongside a senior army officer before saluting. Llandudno town council and the lord lieutenant for Clwyd later stated they believed the man was an impostor, as he was not known to them and had not been invited.
Police arrested the man, from Harlech, on suspicion of offences relating to the unlawful use of military uniforms. A search of his address recovered a naval uniform and a selection of medals. Chief Inspector Trystan Bevan said inquiries were ongoing and further updates would be provided when available.
A council spokesperson earlier said the parade marshal had spoken to the man, who claimed to be from the Lord Lieutenant's office. The spokesperson added that the man laid his wreath respectfully and behaved well before leaving.
