In a significant escalation of regional tensions, a major airbase in the Middle East hosting dozens of Australian Defence Force personnel has been reportedly struck by Iranian missile attacks. Images circulated online over the weekend depicted billowing smoke near the Al Minhad Airbase in Dubai, signalling a direct impact on the strategic facility.
Military Source Confirms Multiple Impacts
A military figure source disclosed to The Nightly that the AMAB base sustained 'multiple impacts' from suspected ballistic weapons. The source emphasised that, despite the severity of the strikes, there were no injuries recorded among personnel at the site.
Australian Defence Minister Provides Assurance
Defence Minister Richard Marles has publicly confirmed the safety of all Australian military personnel stationed in the region. During Question Time in parliament on Monday, Marles stated, 'There are more than 100 Australian serving personnel in a number of countries across the region, but most of whom are in the United Arab Emirates where we have had for many years an operational headquarters at Al Minhad outside of Dubai.'
He further reassured, 'I can report to the house that all of those serving men and women are accounted for and right now are safe.' This announcement comes amid heightened concerns over the security of international forces in the area.
Strategic Importance of Al Minhad Airbase
The Al Minhad Air Base serves as the headquarters for Headquarters Middle East, a compact team that has supported Australian Defence Force missions and contingencies since 2003. Its role is critical in coordinating regional operations, making it a focal point in ongoing geopolitical tensions.
As investigations into the missile strikes continue, authorities are monitoring the situation closely for any further developments. The incident underscores the volatile security landscape in the Middle East and the risks faced by allied forces stationed there.
