Vinegar wash keeps strawberries fresh two weeks longer

Strawberries often spoil before their expiration date due to moisture trapped in plastic packaging. But a simple kitchen ingredient can extend their freshness by up to two weeks.

How vinegar helps

Shari Fitzpatrick, the cook behind chocolate strawberry company Shari's Berries, says washing strawberries in a little vinegar keeps them fresh longer. Vinegar contains acetic acid, which is naturally antibacterial and kills mould spores on the surface.

Fitzpatrick explained: "One of the great things about vinegar is that it destroys harmful bacteria so bathing your strawberries in it will keep them fresh longer. And don't worry about your berries tasting like vinegar. You'll be washing it off."

Proper washing method

Mix 60ml of white vinegar with 360ml of water (a 1:3 ratio). Place strawberries in a bowl, pour the solution over them, and soak for five minutes. Drain in a colander, rinse under tap water, then dry on paper towels.

Line a food container with paper towels and place the dry strawberries inside. The paper towels absorb excess moisture, reducing the risk of mould. Stored this way, strawberries can stay plump and juicy for up to two weeks.

Important note

The vinegar wash cannot reverse mould that has already started growing, so it is best to wash strawberries the same day they are brought home from the shop.
