Iranian Missile Attack on Diego Garcia Raises UK Defence Concerns
Iranian Missile Attack on Diego Garcia Raises UK Defence Fears

Iran Launches Missiles at Diego Garcia Military Base

Iran fired two ballistic missiles at the UK-US Diego Garcia military base on the Chagos Islands on Saturday, targeting a facility approximately 2,600 miles from its borders. The attack was unsuccessful, with one missile reportedly intercepted by a US warship and the other failing mid-flight. This incident occurred before the UK government granted the US permission on Friday to use its bases for strikes against targets in the Strait of Hormuz.

UK Government and Political Reactions

The Ministry of Defence strongly condemned the attack, labelling it "a threat to British interests and British allies". Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasised that the UK will not engage in offensive actions, stating the government has "taken a different view from the US and Israel". She confirmed support for defensive measures against what she described as "reckless Iranian threats".

In contrast, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch warned that the UK is being "dragged into" the conflict with Iran "whether we like it or not". She expressed concern over the missile attack on Diego Garcia and called for proactive leadership, saying, "What we need is a prime minister who can think ahead."

Could Iranian Missiles Reach the UK Mainland?

As tensions escalate, questions have arisen about whether Iran possesses the capability to strike the UK directly. Experts generally consider this very unlikely due to range constraints. The distance from Iran to the UK is around 3,000 miles, whereas Diego Garcia is about 2,600 miles away, though the exact launch location of the missiles remains unclear.

Sky News military analyst Sean Bell highlighted the strategic implications, noting, "All of a sudden the UK is not far away either so that's the huge significance. At least Diego Garcia is well protected, London is not. The UK has no effective ballistic missile defence system in place and therefore, this is a very worrying development for the UK."

Intelligence from the US-based Foundation for Defence of Democracies indicates that Iran's longest-range missile, the Khorramshahr 4, can hit targets between 1,200 and 1,900 miles away, falling short of the UK. Dr Marion Messmer, director of International Security at Chatham House, previously stated, "From what we know about Iran's missile capabilities, [an attack on the UK is] not possible. Other parts of Europe could be at risk, but the UK is out of range."

Broader Context and Recent Incidents

This attack follows an earlier incident this month when RAF Akrotiri on Cyprus was struck by an unmanned drone. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer affirmed on Saturday that the base will not be used for offensive military operations against Iran. The situation underscores ongoing regional instability and the UK's cautious stance in the conflict.
