Iran Missile Threat: UK Has 20-Minute Warning for London

Iran's Missile Capability Poses Direct Threat to UK, Israel Warns

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have issued a stark warning that Iran possesses missiles capable of striking European capitals, including London, Paris, and Berlin. According to the IDF, Britain would receive a mere 20 minutes of warning if Iran ever launched a missile targeting the UK. This alert has intensified scrutiny of the United Kingdom's missile defence systems, with experts raising concerns about their ability to intercept such a threat effectively.

Short Notice and Limited Defences Highlight Vulnerability

If an Iranian missile were directed towards the UK, detection would initially occur through intelligence satellites. Senior security officials would then reportedly rush to Pindar, a secure bunker located five floors beneath the Ministry of Defence. However, the Khorramshahr-4, Iran's fastest warhead, can travel at speeds up to mach 10, or approximately 7,672 miles per hour. This velocity allows it to cover the 2,750-mile distance between Tehran and London in around 20 minutes, leaving minimal time for response.

The Khorramshahr-4 was recently deployed by the Iranian regime in an attempted attack on the UK-US base Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands, demonstrating its operational range of 2,485 miles. The IDF noted that this marks the first instance of the mullahs utilising a long-range missile since the onset of the current conflict.

Expert Analysis on Payload and Interception Challenges

Despite the alarming warning, analysts suggest that the likelihood of Iran successfully hitting the UK or any other European target remains low. Dr Sidharth Kaushal, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi), explained to The Times that any missile fired at the country would need to be both light and fast to reach its destination. This requirement means payloads would likely be limited, with a worst-case scenario involving a warhead weighing between 450 to 550 kilograms.

A payload of this size could potentially destroy a building, but only if it managed to navigate a complex route over western Europe, passing through the airspace of numerous British allies and defence networks. A military source emphasised to The Times that such a missile would have to be extremely precise and evade multiple air defence systems along its path.

Government Response and Defence Capabilities

The UK government has contested the notion that Iran is capable of targeting the UK. Communities Secretary Steve Reed stated on BBC One's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg that there is "no specific assessment that the Iranians are targeting the UK or [that they] even could if they wanted to." He further added, "I’m not aware of any assessment at all that they are even trying to target Europe, let alone that they could if they tried. But even if they did, we have the necessary military capability to defend this country."

Britain's defence infrastructure includes its own Type 45 destroyers and is bolstered by NATO's Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system, designed to intercept intercontinental ballistic missiles. However, the IDF's warning underscores ongoing debates about the adequacy of these defences against emerging threats from state actors like Iran.

The situation remains fluid, with international allies closely monitoring developments as tensions persist in the region.
