UK Defence Secretary John Healey has issued a stark warning to former US President Donald Trump, urging him not to abandon Kyiv if he secures a second term in the White House. Healey emphasised the importance of continued Western support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
In an interview, Healey stressed that any withdrawal of US backing would embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin and undermine NATO's collective security. "The UK stands firmly with Ukraine," he declared. "Weakening support now would send a dangerous signal to Moscow."
The Defence Secretary's comments come amid growing concerns in Europe about Trump's potential return to power. During his first presidency, Trump frequently questioned US involvement in NATO and expressed admiration for Putin.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly appealed for sustained military aid from Western allies. The UK has been one of Kyiv's staunchest supporters, providing significant military assistance and training for Ukrainian forces.
Healey warned that abandoning Ukraine could have far-reaching consequences for global security. "This is about more than just Ukraine," he said. "It's about defending the international rules-based order that has kept Europe safe since World War II."
With the US election looming, European leaders are closely monitoring the campaign. Many fear a Trump victory could dramatically alter Western policy towards Ukraine at a critical juncture in the war.
