Shadow defence secretary John Healey has issued a stark warning about the potential consequences of Donald Trump's possible return to the White House, suggesting it could jeopardise Western support for Ukraine.
In an interview during his visit to Kyiv, Healey expressed concerns that a second Trump presidency might lead to reduced American military aid for Ukraine, which has been crucial in its defence against Russian aggression.
UK's Commitment to Ukraine
Healey emphasised Britain's unwavering support for Ukraine, regardless of political changes in Washington. "The UK's commitment to Ukraine is absolute and unconditional," he stated, while meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukrainian defence officials.
Potential Policy Shifts Under Trump
The Labour frontbencher highlighted Trump's previous scepticism about NATO and his admiration for Vladimir Putin as causes for concern. "We've seen Trump's approach to international alliances before," Healey noted. "There's genuine worry about what this might mean for Ukraine's defence capabilities."
Healey's comments come as Ukrainian forces prepare for what many predict will be a crucial phase in the conflict, with Western military support playing a pivotal role.
Bipartisan Support in Question
The shadow minister stressed the importance of maintaining bipartisan support for Ukraine in the US Congress, warning that political divisions could impact future aid packages. "This isn't about party politics - it's about global security," he added.
As the US presidential election campaign gains momentum, international observers are closely watching how potential policy changes might affect the ongoing war in Ukraine and the broader geopolitical landscape.
