UK Defence Secretary Confirms Ballistic Missiles Fired Towards Cyprus
Ballistic Missiles Fired Towards Cyprus, UK Defence Secretary Says

Two ballistic missiles with the capacity to inflict significant damage were fired towards Cyprus yesterday, according to a confirmed statement from UK Defence Secretary John Healey. The incident highlights escalating tensions in the region, with Iran implicated in recent attacks.

UK Defence Secretary Issues Warning on Regional Threats

In a morning briefing, Defence Secretary John Healey addressed the missile launch, stating, "In Cyprus, we had two ballistic missiles fired in the direction of Cyprus. Now we are pretty sure they weren't targeted at Cyprus, but nevertheless it demonstrates how our bases, our personnel, military and civilians at the moment are at risk with a regime that is increasingly indiscriminate, widespread and uncontrolled in the attacks. It's mounting."

Healey emphasised that the Ministry of Defence has assessed Cyprus was likely not the intended target. However, he described the event as indicative of increasingly reckless behaviour by Iran's regime, which has been lashing out across the Middle East.

Concerns Over Civilian and Military Safety

The Defence Secretary expanded on the risks, noting, "When I talk about increasingly indiscriminate attacks, I know people at home will be worried that not just military targets were hit last yesterday, but also we've seen hotels in Dubai and Bahrain. We've seen Kuwait's civilian airport. But in that Bahrain military base that was hit by missiles and drones yesterday, we had 300 British personnel, some within several hundred yards of the strike."

This statement underscores the broader context of regional instability, where civilian infrastructure and international military personnel are facing heightened threats. The incident in Cyprus follows a pattern of recent attacks attributed to Iran, including rocket trails observed over Israeli cities from the Iron Dome missile defence system.

As tensions mount, the UK government is monitoring the situation closely, with Healey's comments serving as a stark reminder of the volatile security environment. The confirmation of the missile launch towards Cyprus adds to growing concerns about the spread of conflict and the safety of allied forces and civilians in the area.
