Wishaw residents are being urged to take part in a short survey as North Lanarkshire Council reviews its Town Centre Action Plan. The review aims to ensure the plan reflects changing community priorities and new opportunities since the original plan was approved in 2023.
Survey and public event details
Locals are being asked to identify local priorities for change and how the town centre can be developed over the next 10 years. A council spokesperson said: “Come along to our event on Tuesday, September 1, at the Jim Foley Community Centre, John Street, Wishaw. It will start at 6pm and continue through to 8pm. Meet our team, have a chat about the issues affecting Wishaw and give your thoughts on what you want to see developed in the town centre. Or please take a few minutes to complete our online survey.”
Background on Town Action Plans
Town Action Plans were developed and approved for Airdrie, Bellshill, Kilsyth, Motherwell, Wishaw and Shotts during 2023 and 2024. These plans are intended to help deliver the long-term Town Vision for each area. The plans were subject to a minor review in 2025 to ensure they reflect best practice, completed actions and changes in funding priorities. Town Action Plans will now be reviewed every two years to allow local residents and organisations to inform these plans.
Ambition for town centres
While the ambition for town centres is to move towards a more mixed-use offering to improve resilience and recognise the shift in how we use our town centres, the council wants to retain and support the retail sector and assist its recovery from the double impacts of an economic downturn and the coronavirus pandemic. The council website states: “More people living in town centres means more support for local businesses. It means keeping bus routes active. It means a safer environment thanks to passive policing. These all make a town more attractive to visitors which in turn means more benefits to the local economy.”
