US States Extend Bar Hours for World Cup

Several US states have approved measures to extend bar and restaurant hours during the World Cup, aiming to enhance fan experiences and support local businesses. Kansas, Missouri, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Washington have sanctioned provisions to extend alcohol sales, with similar proposals under consideration in New York and Massachusetts.

In Philadelphia, closing times can be pushed back to 4 am during the tournament, while some Kansas City establishments may operate until 5 am. These changes require municipal approval, and no business is mandated to extend hours. The hospitality industry, facing declining sales and inflation, largely welcomes the opportunity.

Mark Prinzinger, owner of Lion Sports Bar in Philadelphia, described the atmosphere as a "magical experience" and has hired additional staff, streamlined menus, and planned late-night programming. "People want to have a beer with other soccer fans," he said, noting that the World Cup brings people together globally.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro approved legislation allowing bars and restaurants to close at 4 am instead of 2 am between June 11 and July 20. He released a video cracking open a beer and urged responsible celebration. However, concerns about public safety and law enforcement strain have been raised.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas initially said the city "doesn't need bars operating 23 hours" but later submitted a plan allowing restaurants and bars to stay open until 3 am, and certain establishments until 5 am with a security plan. Bar owners argue that most businesses train staff to prevent over-serving, and that patrons are focused on the game.

Rhode Island Representative Teresa Tanzi noted that not everyone will be drinking heavily, with families likely seeking food and soft drinks. The state is considering extending alcohol sales to 3 am and closing times to 4 am, up from the current 1 am last call. Similar extensions are also happening in England and Wales, where pubs can stay open until 2 am if the English or Scottish teams advance.
