Sky News was forced to interrupt its regular programming on Tuesday evening as peaceful protests in Belfast descended into violence. Presenter Yalda Hakim handed over to journalist Amanda Ferguson, who delivered a breaking news update from the scene.
Peaceful Protests Turn Destructive
"That appears to be the peaceful proceedings over for the evening," Ferguson reported, describing burning barricades, buses, and vehicles. She noted that police were still referring to the incidents as "sporadic pockets of disorder."
The protests erupted in response to a horrific knife attack that occurred on Monday evening on Kinnaird Avenue in north Belfast. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that a man in his 40s remains in hospital in a serious condition, and a Sudanese man in his 30s has been arrested.
Officials Appeal for Calm
Local MPs had been aware of planned protests and urged restraint. Justice Minister Naomi Long released a statement pleading for calm: "The only people who will be harmed if there is unrest on our streets are innocent people. The only thing that will be achieved is further victims."
She added, "I'm asking for people to be calm, to be rational at a time when it is easy to be irrational, because you're hurt, you're upset, and you're angry. It is not in the interests of anyone in Northern Ireland for us to see our community torn apart."
Ferguson also highlighted that police are appealing to anyone with influence in Northern Ireland to discourage further violence, acknowledging that summer months often see an uptick in such activity, sometimes with a "recreational element."
