Zainab Deen, a Sierra Leonean, moved into flat 115 with her baby son Jeremiah in December 2015. She loved her council flat and kept it immaculate. On the night of the fire, she had just secured a job as a waitress. She called her friend Francis Dean in the early hours as the fire spread. He urged her to come down, but she remained trapped.
Neighbours on the 14th floor included Denis Murphy in flat 111, Syrian refugees Omar and Mohammed Alhaj Ali in flat 112, Oluwaseun Talabi, Rosemary Oyewole, and their daughter in flat 113, and Nida Mangoba with her son and estranged husband in flat 116. Most were happy living at Grenfell, though some had safety concerns.
The public inquiry heard that the 14th floor exemplifies 'preventable death.' Firefighters struggled to contain the blaze, which had spread rapidly. The inquiry continues to examine the response and the actions of commanders.
