A Reform UK councillor has called for the monitoring of unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs), commonly referred to as UFOs, above Doncaster Sheffield Airport as part of its planned reopening. Councillor Kieran Lay put forward the proposal during a City of Doncaster Council meeting, suggesting the formation of a 'Doncaster UAP Overview and Safety Committee or panel' to examine recorded activity in the area.
Airport Reopening Plans
Doncaster Sheffield Airport, which closed in 2022 due to financial viability issues, is set to reopen with the support of a £57 million loan from Doncaster Council. Mr Lay questioned the commitment of public funds without first investigating UAP sightings to ensure the airport's safety and long-term success. He argued that understanding these phenomena could be crucial for operational security and public confidence.
Context and Reactions
The proposal comes amid growing interest in UAPs globally, with governments increasingly acknowledging the need for transparency. However, the move has drawn mixed reactions, with some councillors expressing skepticism about the prioritization of resources. A council spokesperson stated that all safety aspects of the airport reopening would be thoroughly assessed, but did not confirm whether a dedicated UAP committee would be established.
