Pack Smarter for Stress-Free UK Staycations: Expert Tips
Pack Smarter for UK Staycations: Expert Tips

More than half of Brits typically pack more than they need for a UK staycation, according to a poll of 2,000 adults. Many admit to forgetting essential items such as underwear, glasses, contact lenses, and wallets. The survey revealed that 51% overpack, with 44% identifying as 'overpackers'. A quarter of respondents have packed so much that it blocked their view through the car's rear window.

Common Overpacking Habits

Some Brits take toilet paper, bedding, and even spices on holiday. However, many forget chargers (28%), toiletries (20%), and medication (13%). Organisation expert Dilly Carter, partnering with Halfords, advises: 'With no luggage limits, it's easy to overpack. But a few simple tweaks can make all the difference. Think about your zones—keep food together and activities grouped for quick unloading.'

Car Safety Considerations

For 80% of staycationers travelling by car, safety checks are often neglected. 17% hit the road without checking tyre pressure, fuel, battery level, or washer fluid. Paul Ray from Halfords warns: 'Shoving the kitchen sink into the boot can change how your car handles. We're helping families cut stress and ensure extra weight doesn't compromise safety.'

Packing Time and Stress

On average, Brits spend 50 minutes packing for a three-day staycation, though over a quarter take more than an hour. For one in five, packing triggers stress, mainly due to fear of forgetting something. Weather is the primary concern for 52% due to its unpredictability.

Expert Recommendations

Carter suggests using roof boxes or bike racks to free up space. 'Some cars aren't fit for too much kit. Consider extra storage to ensure room for essentials,' she adds. By packing smarter, staycationers can reduce stress and enjoy a smoother journey.
