In a recent crackdown on unlawful evictions, the New South Wales rental taskforce has uncovered approximately 30 breaches of no-grounds eviction laws out of 635 potential violations investigated. These infringements have resulted in total fines amounting to $65,450.
Details of the Breaches
Most of the contraventions occurred when landlords attempted to re-let a property online during the exclusion period following an eviction. This practice undermines the protections intended for tenants under the state's rental laws.
Tenants' Union Response
Leo Patterson Ross, CEO of the Tenants' Union of NSW, expressed his approval of the government's commitment to being a "more active regulator." He noted that the union had identified properties that were "getting through the gaps" and escaping penalties, particularly those not listed on online platforms.
The taskforce's findings highlight ongoing challenges in enforcing tenancy laws and ensuring compliance among landlords. The Tenants' Union continues to advocate for stronger measures to close loopholes and protect renters from unfair eviction practices.
