A devastated husband has been ordered to tear down a garden driveway he built to help his seriously ill wife, after local council officials deemed it a breach of planning rules.
The man, who wished to remain anonymous, constructed the driveway to provide easier access for his wife, who suffers from a debilitating condition. However, the council ruled the structure did not comply with regulations and must be removed.
'Jobsworth' Council Crushes Family's Hopes
The distraught husband described the council's decision as "heartless" and accused them of being "jobsworths" for refusing to consider the human impact of their ruling.
"I built this to help my wife get in and out of the house safely," he explained. "Now they're making me destroy it, as if paperwork matters more than people's wellbeing."
Community Outrage Over Bureaucratic Blunder
Neighbours have rallied behind the couple, expressing outrage at the council's inflexibility. Many have described the situation as a perfect example of bureaucracy gone mad.
"It's not hurting anyone," said one local resident. "The council should show some compassion instead of hiding behind red tape."
Could Common Sense Prevail?
As pressure mounts on the council to reconsider, questions are being raised about whether local authorities have become too rigid in enforcing minor regulations at the expense of vulnerable residents.
The case highlights growing concerns about the balance between necessary planning controls and common-sense exceptions for genuine hardship cases.
