In a surprising move, Copenhagen City Hall has pledged to repay wedding fees to couples who tied the knot in recent years. The decision comes after widespread criticism over the steep costs of civil ceremonies, which many argued were unfairly high.
Why the Refund?
The backlash began when couples and advocacy groups highlighted the exorbitant fees charged by the municipality for weddings at City Hall. Many claimed the costs were disproportionate, especially compared to other European cities.
"We’ve listened to the concerns of our citizens," said a City Hall spokesperson. "This repayment scheme is our way of acknowledging those grievances and ensuring fairness."
Who Qualifies?
The refund will apply to couples who married in Copenhagen between 2020 and 2024. The exact amount repaid will depend on the original fee paid, with some couples expected to receive hundreds of euros back.
What’s Next?
City Hall has also announced plans to review its fee structure to prevent future disputes. "Transparency and affordability must be priorities," the spokesperson added.
Couples eligible for repayment will be contacted directly by the municipality in the coming weeks.
