Bondi Massacre Heroes to Receive Key to City and Lifetime Beach Pass
Three individuals hailed as heroes for their courageous actions during the devastating Bondi Beach terrorist attack will be honoured with a 'Key to the City' and a lifetime Waverley Beach Pass. Waverley Council, which administers the Bondi area, unanimously approved these symbolic awards last week in recognition of their extraordinary bravery.
Unanimous Council Decision
The recipients are Ahmed al Ahmed, Gefen Bitton, and Leibel Lazaroff. All three men have been widely praised for risking their own lives to assist others during the horrific incident at Bondi Beach on December 14, which tragically resulted in the loss of 15 innocent lives. The attack targeted a Jewish festival celebrating the first night of Hanukkah.
It is alleged that Naveed Akram and his father, Sajid Akram, opened fire on the gathering. Sajid Akram was fatally shot by police during the confrontation, while Naveed Akram remains in custody awaiting trial. The swift and selfless actions of the three honourees during the six-minute attack have been highlighted as particularly heroic.
Acts of Extraordinary Courage
Mr Al Ahmed has been specifically recognised for wrestling a firearm from Sajid Akram during the chaos. Mr Bitton immediately ran to Mr Al Ahmed's side to help confront the attacker. Meanwhile, Mr Lazaroff assisted Rabbi Eli Schlanger, who later died, in providing critical aid to NSW Police Constable Scott Dyson after he was shot and critically wounded.
Waverley Mayor Will Nemesh stated that the awards will be presented 'in symbolic recognition of their significant bravery.' He emphasised, 'These gestures symbolise the enduring impact of their selflessness on our entire community and are a token of our never-ending gratitude.'
Injured Heroes and Community Gratitude
All three men sustained serious gunshot wounds during the attack and were hospitalised. Mayor Nemesh expressed the profound debt owed by the community, saying, 'Bondi, the entire Waverley community, and indeed all Australians owe a huge debt of gratitude to Ahmed, Gefen and Leibel.'
In addition to these local honours, Mayor Nemesh, Deputy Mayor Keri Spooner, and Waverley Council General Manager Emily Scott will collaborate to compile a list of suggested recipients for the Prime Minister's Special Honours List on behalf of the council. This initiative aims to further acknowledge exceptional acts of bravery and service.
The council's decision underscores a collective commitment to honouring those who demonstrate remarkable courage in the face of extreme danger. The formal presentation of the Key to the City and lifetime beach passes will serve as a lasting tribute to their heroism.
