Bill Gates Withdraws from Keynote at India's Landmark AI Summit

Bill Gates will no longer deliver his keynote address at India's flagship artificial intelligence summit, the Gates Foundation announced on Thursday. This decision follows mounting criticism over Mr Gates's past association with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Government Faces Backlash Over Invitation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has been receiving significant flak from opposition political parties for including Mr Gates as a keynote speaker at the AI Impact Summit. This event is billed as the first such global AI gathering to be hosted in the developing world. Mr Gates's name featured prominently in the latest batch of Epstein files released in January, which intensified the controversy surrounding his participation.

In a statement posted by Gates Foundation India, the organisation clarified: "After careful consideration, and to ensure the focus remains on the AI Summit's key priorities, Mr. Gates will not be delivering his keynote address. The Gates Foundation will be represented by Ankur Vora, President of Africa and India Offices, who will speak later today at the Summit." The statement further emphasised that "The Gates Foundation remains fully committed to our work in India to advance our shared health and development goals."

Reversal from Earlier Assurances

This announcement marks a stark reversal from earlier assurances provided to The Independent, which confirmed that Mr Gates would attend and deliver his scheduled address. Confusion regarding his participation had surfaced earlier in the week when his name briefly disappeared from the list of key speakers on the summit website. This prompted widespread speculation in Indian media that his invitation was being "reviewed".

However, on Tuesday, a spokesperson for Mr Gates dismissed these reports, telling The Independent: "Bill Gates is attending the AI Impact Summit. He will be delivering his keynote as scheduled." Mr Gates had arrived in India earlier this week and met with Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu in Amaravati. During this meeting, he praised the state's innovative use of artificial intelligence and technology across health, agriculture, and education sectors. The Gates Foundation is actively involved in public health and development initiatives within the state, though his visit also prompted small protests in Andhra Pradesh.

Epstein Allegations and Gates's Response

Jeffrey Epstein once claimed that the billionaire businessman and philanthropist had engaged in extramarital sex, according to an email released by the Department of Justice. In a 225-word email sent to himself on 18 July 2013, with the subject line "bill," the deceased paedophile financier wrote: "I have decided to resign my position effective immediately with BG3 and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation." He alleged that, as an associate of Mr Gates, he had been asked to do things that were "potentially over the line into the illegal" and claimed he helped facilitate "illicit trysts" for the billionaire during a "severe marital dispute" with his then-wife, Melinda Gates.

A spokesperson for Mr Gates vehemently denied these allegations, stating: "These claims are absolutely absurd and completely false. The only thing these documents demonstrate is Epstein's frustration that he did not have an ongoing relationship with Gates and the lengths he would go to entrap and defame." Previously, Mr Gates told PBS News that he had dinners with Epstein in the past in hopes of raising funds for global health, describing these meetings as "a mistake" and expressing regret. The Gates Foundation has not provided any further explanation regarding the changes to Mr Gates's India schedule.

Summit Context and Attendees

The AI Impact Summit attracted significant attention as a landmark event, featuring other tech giants such as Sam Altman and Sundar Pichai, alongside 20 heads of state. The withdrawal of Bill Gates, a prominent figure in global philanthropy and technology, underscores the ongoing sensitivity and political ramifications associated with the Epstein scandal, even years after his death. The Gates Foundation's decision aims to refocus the summit on its core AI priorities, though it inevitably highlights the persistent shadow cast by Epstein's associations on high-profile individuals and events.
