Comedian and television presenter Alan Carr has disclosed that his luxurious £2.8 million London residence is facing a severe drainage crisis due to a colossal 'fatberg' discovered beneath the property. The 49-year-old Celebrity Traitors champion, who has resided in the upscale bachelor pad since his separation from husband Paul Drayton in 2022, described the situation as a costly and frustrating mystery.
The Unwelcome Discovery
Local council authorities contacted Carr to inform him of a significant blockage in the sewage system under his home. The culprit was identified as a fatberg, a rock-like mass composed of congealed waste, fats, and non-biodegradable materials. Specifically, the blockage was attributed to a buildup of wet wipes that had been flushed down the toilet.
A Mysterious Culprit
During the latest episode of his Bottoms Up! podcast, Carr expressed bewilderment, insisting that he does not own or use wet wipes in his household. He speculated that one of his friends must be responsible for flushing the wipes, leading to the problematic fatberg formation.
'I have a mystery. Council have been in touch. There's a fatberg under my house... which is blocking up the pipe,' Carr explained. 'Plot twist: someone's been putting wet wipes down my toilet - and I don't have wet wipes in my house. One of my friends is doing the toilet and... I don't know who it is.'
The blockage has caused practical issues, including malfunctioning showers and bubbling water, with Carr noting the financial burden as he and neighbours must contribute to the cleanup costs.
Domestic Developments and Castle Dreams
In a contrasting domestic update, Carr is on the verge of acquiring the keys to Ayton Castle, a £3.25 million Traitors-style Scottish estate he purchased earlier this year. The sprawling property features:
- 17 bedrooms and nine bathrooms
- A five-storey tower and private chapel
- 106 acres of gardens
Inspired by his experience on Celebrity Traitors, which filmed at Ardross Castle, Carr plans to renovate Ayton Castle into a luxury hotel and spa. He has secured a seven-figure deal with Disney+ for a series documenting the transformation, tentatively titled Castle Man.
Baronial Ambitions
Carr has also revealed that the purchase includes the rights to The Barony of Ayton title, dating back to 1324, making him a baron. He expressed his excitement about this new status and plans to create his own tartan.
'I'm in my turret era. I want a castle and I'm 50. I'm not going to be around forever. I think 50, I just want to do what I want to do,' Carr stated on the Staying Relevant podcast. 'I've always wanted a castle. I'm a baron. I'm going to get my own tartan.'
The renovation series is reportedly being produced by Expectation, the company behind Clarkson's Farm, adding to the project's anticipation.
