UK Prisons Could Learn from El Salvador Jail: Madeley

Richard Madeley has insisted Britain can learn lessons to improve its beleaguered prison system from the world's toughest jail in El Salvador. The broadcaster spent time inside the Terrorism Confinement Center (Cecot), the cornerstone of Salvadoran president Nayib Bukele's war on drug cartels and key to deportations from the US under President Donald Trump.

Inside the World's Toughest Prison

Madeley witnessed 3,000 shaven-headed inmates including gang members, rapists and terrorists, sat in silence in windowless concrete cells inside the £85 million jail in Tecoluca where they were kept locked up for 23 and a half hours a day. The Good Morning Britain host – who will front the Channel 5 documentary 'Inside the World's Mega Prison' next Wednesday - said the harsh regime could help authorities in Britain fix what he described as the 'broken' prison system.

Human Rights Concerns

Madeley said there was 'no question that Cecot breaches human rights', but do you think the UK should build similar jails? Vote in the Daily Mail's latest poll. In yesterday's poll, Mail readers were asked: 'Would a Labour government led by Andy Burnham beat Reform UK at a general election?' Out of more than 20,000 votes, 88 per cent of you said 'no' and 12 per cent said 'yes'.
