Paris Saint-Germain secured a narrow 5-4 victory over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night. The high-scoring encounter drew sharp criticism from former Champions League winner Wayne Rooney, who lambasted the defensive displays from both sides as 'immature' and 'chaotic'.
Rooney's Verdict
Speaking after the match, Rooney did not hold back in his assessment. 'Coaches and players should not be happy after conceding so many goals,' he said. 'The lack of communication and organisation in defence was alarming. It's not just about individual errors; the whole defensive structure was missing.'
Seedorf Echoes Concerns
Fellow Champions League great Clarence Seedorf echoed Rooney's sentiments. He dismissed Bayern manager Vincent Kompany's claims that his team had defended well, stating: 'Defensive organisation is paramount at this level. You cannot concede four goals away from home and claim to have defended well. Both teams need to go back to the drawing board.'
Looking Ahead
Despite PSG's lead, Rooney believes Bayern Munich remain slight favourites for the second leg due to playing at home. However, he stressed that both sides must significantly improve their defending to avoid a repeat of the chaotic affair. 'If they defend like that again, it could be another crazy night in Munich,' he added.
