The Greater Manchester Mayoral election will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026. Voters across the ten boroughs will choose a new mayor after Andy Burnham was disqualified from the role following his victory in the Makerfield by-election last month.
Role and responsibilities
The Greater Manchester Mayor oversees policy areas including transport, policing, and housing, affecting all ten boroughs: Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, and Wigan. The position was created in 2017 to devolve powers from national government to the region.
Who can vote?
To vote in the election, you must be registered to vote in one of the ten Greater Manchester local authorities. You must also be aged 18 or over on July 30, 2026. Eligible voters include UK, Irish, qualifying Commonwealth, and EU citizens, as well as EU citizens with retained rights.
The deadline to register for this election has passed, but you can still register for future elections. Voters must also show an accepted form of voter ID at the polling station. The Electoral Commission has published a full list of accepted IDs.
