Scottish Economy Secretary Stephen Flynn has declared that the SNP will “fight to protect” oil and gas while simultaneously championing continued investment in renewable energy. Speaking during a campaign event in Aberdeen South ahead of Thursday’s Westminster by-election, Flynn emphasised the party’s “unique” stance on energy policy.
Flynn’s Campaign Message
Flynn argued that this dual approach would help the SNP retain the Aberdeen South seat, despite challenges from the Conservatives and Reform UK. He warned that backing Nigel Farage’s Reform UK “threatens 50,000 renewables jobs,” while criticising the Conservatives for having “failed the communities of Aberdeen” by mishandling the environmental analysis for the Rosebank oil and gas field, leading to legal delays.
Candidate Richard Thomson
Flynn asserted that SNP candidate Richard Thomson is the only candidate who can “credibly go down to Westminster and deliver for the people of this city.” He blamed Westminster decisions for the downturn in the oil and gas industry, noting that “tens of thousands of jobs have been lost.”
Energy Transition
Flynn stressed the need for a sustainable managed transition away from fossil fuels, stating, “What we need to see is Scotland’s energy in Scotland’s hands.” He added that only the SNP offers a platform that protects both oil and gas jobs and invests in offshore renewables for the long term.
Criticism of Rivals
Flynn criticised Reform UK for claiming oil and gas will last forever and opposing the energy transition, and the Conservatives for introducing the energy profits levy and mishandling Rosebank. He concluded that voters want local representatives who understand the industry and are committed to a sustainable transition.
