POLL: Is Trump Right to Confront Starmer on Immigration?

US President Donald Trump is set to clash with Sir Keir Starmer over Labour's immigration policy, reports suggest. The two leaders are due to meet at the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, which runs from today until Wednesday. According to GB News, the American Commander-in-Chief will bring up immigration with his British counterpart in the wake of a horrific attack by a migrant in Belfast, Northern Ireland, last week and the shocking police actions in the case of Henry Nowak.

Background on the Incidents

Sudanese migrant Hadi Alodid, 30, appeared in court on June 10, charged with attempted murder after a knife attack in Belfast which left victim Stephen Ogilvie with horrific injuries, including the loss of his left eye. On June 1, British Sikh Vickrum Digwa, 23, was jailed for life for the murder of 18-year-old student Henry Nowak. Digwa lied to police, telling them he had been subjected to racism after he stabbed Henry five times in a random attack. When officers arrived, they believed Digwa's lie and handcuffed Henry as he lay dying on the ground.

Harrowing bodycam footage released after the court case revealed Henry told the responding police that he had been stabbed and could not breathe. At one stage, one officer responded: "Don't think you have, mate." The shocking case has led to claims of "two-tier" policing in the UK, where ethnic minorities are treated differently to white people.

Trump's Potential Intervention

It is reported that President Trump will bring up immigration and the Nowak case with the Prime Minister. Take our Daily Express POLL and tell us if you think Trump is right to raise immigration with the PM.

Immigration Statistics

According to the House of Commons library, around 44,000 people were detected arriving in the UK via unauthorised routes in the year ending March 2026. This is around three times the number detected in any year between 2018 and 2020. Some 90% of those detected in the year ending March 2026 arrived on small boats, of which 75% were adult men, 12% were adult women and 13% were children.

Asylum Hotel Contract Terminated

With Trump and Sir Keir set to meet in France, it was announced the UK Government is terminating its contract with an asylum hotel that became the centre of protests when a resident sexually assaulted a teenage girl. All asylum seekers have already been moved out of the Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex, which will officially stop being used by July 11, Epping Forest District Council said. They are understood to have been relocated as a precaution over fire safety regulations. The council welcomed the news, saying it would allow it to “concentrate on rebuilding our community”, but hit out at the Home Office which it said had shown “little regard” for the town.

The hotel became the focus of protests last year after resident Hadush Kebatu sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl. Multiple demonstrations were held over the summer which spilled into the town centre at one point. Kebatu was found guilty of five offences – including sexual assault – and jailed, and was then mistakenly released from HMP Chelmsford last October before he was detained and deported to Ethiopia.
