Ed Davey Urges Keir Starmer to Sue Donald Trump Over Tariff Damages
Davey Challenges Starmer to Sue Trump Over Tariff Damages

Liberal Democrats leader Sir Ed Davey has issued a direct challenge to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, urging him to initiate legal proceedings against US President Donald Trump. The call for action came during Sir Ed's address at the Scottish Liberal Democrats conference in Edinburgh, where he demanded the UK Government sue the White House for a staggering $100 billion in compensation for damages inflicted by trade tariffs.

A Bold Legal Challenge

Speaking passionately to attendees, Sir Ed branded President Trump as "the most dangerous, damaging US president of modern times". His remarks followed what he described as a "brilliant" decision by the US Supreme Court, which on Friday struck down trade tariffs imposed by the president last April. Seizing on this judicial development, Sir Ed argued that the UK should now pursue its own legal recourse against the Trump administration.

Direct Advice to the Prime Minister

"My advice today to Keir Starmer is to sue Donald Trump for 100 billion dollars for the damage he has caused to Scotland and our country," Sir Ed declared emphatically. "It's the only language he understands." He elaborated that this substantial sum would account for the extensive harm done to the British economy, including job losses, business disruptions, reduced investment, and increased cost of living pressures directly attributable to the tariffs.

Criticism of Starmer's Approach

In discussions with the Press Association, Sir Ed revealed he has "long said Keir Starmer's approach is wrong" regarding UK-US relations under President Trump. He contended that the Prime Minister's strategy of engagement has been ineffective, stating bluntly, "You can't kowtow to a bully." Furthermore, Sir Ed expressed skepticism about any tangible achievements from Starmer's trade negotiations with the United States, suggesting alternative diplomatic paths would yield better results.

Alternative Trade Strategies

Sir Ed pointed to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as a model of resilience, praising him for having "stood up" to President Trump. He advocated for the UK to diversify its trade partnerships, proposing stronger alliances with European partners through a new EU-UK customs union and enhanced deals with Commonwealth nations like Canada. "The UK Prime Minister should not yield to a bully," Sir Ed insisted. "He should look at trade deals with our partners in Europe, a new EU-UK customs union, and with other countries, Commonwealth countries like Canada, so we have alternatives."

This forceful stance underscores a significant political divergence, with the Liberal Democrats positioning themselves as advocates for a more assertive foreign policy that holds international partners accountable for economic damages. The conference in Edinburgh served as a platform for Sir Ed to articulate a vision of robust legal and trade strategies distinct from the current government's approach.
