Belfast Riots: Residents Fear for Lives After Violence

On the ground in the Belfast riots, The Guardian reporter Hannah Al-Othman speaks to Helen Pidd about the anti-immigrant rioting in Northern Ireland and the residents afraid for their lives.

Housemates Caught in the Violence

Stella and Sumayah are housemates. Both are care workers and students from Uganda, living together in west Belfast. On Tuesday night, the riots across the city came to their street. Neighbouring houses were set on fire, smoke seeped through their door, and masked men gathered outside. When they called emergency services, they were told not to leave their home. Sumayah, overwhelmed by fear, passed out.

Community in Fear

Hannah Al-Othman reports on the violence and the terror gripping city residents. Helen Pidd also hears from a Sudanese refugee and father of four who is considering leaving Belfast due to the unrest.
