A woman from Queensland claims to have dramatically improved her skin and overall health through a daily regimen of drinking her own urine and applying the remainder to her hair and skin. Lucy Aura, a 44-year-old spiritual teacher and mother of two based in Kuranda, says her skin was previously blotchy, inflamed, oily, and prone to breakouts, rashes, and insect bites before she began urine therapy in 2021.
The Daily Routine of Urine Consumption and Application
Lucy describes her practice as "looping," which involves urinating into a cup and drinking it fresh on most days. "What I don't drink I aim to catch in a jar, and evolve," she explained. "I use the evolved urine on my hair, skin, I've brushed my teeth and gargled with it. I use it in my ears, nose, eyes, and as enemas."
She further elaborated that when she feels the need to detoxify, she drinks evolved urine throughout the day, which she claims induces purges and releases through whatever area of the body requires it. According to Lucy, this therapy has reprogrammed her gut, leading to different food choices, and it cleanses the body by killing parasites.
Claimed Physical Benefits and Spiritual Connection
Lucy attributes numerous physical benefits to urine therapy, stating it contains melanin that smooths skin tone, creatine for muscle power, stem cells, and hormones. "Hormones and enzymes take a lot of energy to produce by the body and so reintroducing is highly beneficial," she said. "These are just a few benefits on a physical level."
She also emphasized the spiritual aspect, noting that urine therapy "encourages us to listen and make better choices." Lucy first tried the practice after meeting two women who appeared healthy and explained how it worked, feeling "called to give it a try" and continuing ever since.
Negative Reactions and Personal Resilience
Despite facing negative reactions from others who find her practice strange, Lucy remains undeterred. "Many people believe me to be very strange because I practice this," she admitted. "But the more I practice it the less I care!"
Medical Warnings and Scientific Perspectives
While the concept of urotherapy has existed in various folk traditions for centuries, modern science and medicine strongly advise against it. A common misconception is that urine is sterile; however, although it starts relatively clean in the kidneys, it picks up bacteria during excretion.
Urine is concentrated with nitrogenous wastes, salts, and minerals. Re-ingesting it forces the kidneys to filter the same waste twice, potentially leading to overwork and damage. It is high in sodium and other minerals, and drinking it can significantly disrupt the body's delicate electrolyte balance, resulting in dehydration.
Additionally, urine contains waste products like urea and creatinine. If an individual is taking medications, those metabolites are also present, essentially causing a "re-dosing" with processed chemicals. It can carry pathogens that may cause urinary tract infections or gastrointestinal issues if swallowed.
The ammonia and salts in urine can be highly irritating to sensitive skin, potentially leading to redness, itching, or "urine dermatitis," similar to nappy rash in adults. If there are open cuts, sores, or active acne, bacteria in urine can enter the skin and cause secondary infections.
Even the US Army Field Manual explicitly advises against drinking urine in survival situations because the high salt content can increase thirst and worsen illness.
