With summer approaching, many people are swapping heavy jumpers for lighter clothing, including white socks. However, keeping white socks bright can be challenging as they quickly accumulate stains from sweat and body oils. A common mistake is reaching for bleach, which can weaken fabrics and worsen yellowing over time.
Marilee Nelson from Branch Basic recommends a natural alternative: 'sunning' laundry. She explains that placing white socks in direct sunlight for a few hours can break down organic stains using ultraviolet radiation. The UV light triggers oxidation reactions that dissolve stains and kill odour-causing bacteria, leaving socks whiter and fresher without chemicals.
For best results, hang socks outside between noon and 3pm when the sun is strongest. Turn them after a few hours to ensure even exposure, but avoid leaving them out too long to prevent fibre damage. After several hours, shake the socks before bringing them indoors; they should appear noticeably brighter.
If socks remain dull, pre-soaking in lemon juice or soda crystals can enhance the effect. This method works only on white or light-coloured clothing, as sunlight will fade darker garments. Sunning is not a replacement for washing but helps maintain fabric appearance without bleach.
