Food enthusiast Lana Robinson is now encouraging people to ditch the mayo in favour of a more wholesome alternative that will not only make the sandwich creamier, but also significantly increase its protein content.
Taking to TikTok, where she is well known for posting content about health and nutrition, Lana previously went viral with her distinctive tuna salad recipe. Her original video has amassed over 1.4 million views and received widespread praise from viewers who preferred it to the traditional mayo-based version. The only change required is swapping your usual mayonnaise for cottage cheese.
"It might sound like it's a wild combination, but trust me, it's going to taste good," she said, before revealing her secret recipe hack.
How to Make Creamy Tuna Sandwiches Without Mayonnaise
To begin, Lana drains the liquid from her tin of tuna, noting that any variety of tuna will work perfectly well, before transferring the fish into a bowl and breaking it down into smaller pieces using a fork. She then moves on to incorporating chopped onions and pickled jalapeños, along with a pinch of salt and pepper, while again noting that you can choose whichever additions you prefer for your tuna mixture.
Next comes the preparation of her secret ingredient — cottage cheese. Rather than folding it directly into the tuna, she first transfers it to a blender to achieve a smoother, creamier consistency. "It's so nice and creamy, and that's exactly what we want," she said as she showed off her own creamy cottage cheese mixture. She goes on to say: "I know it sounds wild. It's a wild combination, I know, but just trust me, it tastes so delicious."
Once the cottage cheese has been blended, it can simply be stirred through the rest of the tuna mixture before being spread onto bread to create a protein-packed sandwich that's as tasty as it is nutritious. "And again, it doesn't get healthier than this," she added, referring to the healthy properties of cottage cheese.
While many people may have reservations about swapping out mayonnaise in favour of cottage cheese, it actually makes for an exceptionally wholesome substitution. In contrast to mayonnaise, which is calorie-dense and high in fats, cottage cheese is a nutrient-rich, low-calorie powerhouse brimming with protein, calcium and B vitamins.
