Why Towels Become Rough
Two main factors cause towels to feel like sandpaper: hard water deposits and residue from laundry products such as detergent and fabric softener. Even with proper care, buildup continues over time, but the damage is reversible.
Many people recommend natural cleaners like white vinegar, baking soda, or soda crystals, but citric acid is favored by cleaning professionals for its effectiveness.
What Is Citric Acid?
Citric acid is a weak organic acid naturally found in citrus fruits like lemons, limes, and grapefruits. In laundry, it works by latching onto minerals from hard water and drawing them away from cotton fibers, making them water-soluble so they rinse away. While vinegar can do this to some extent, citric acid is generally more effective at dissolving stubborn mineral deposits.
Most laundry detergents are alkaline to remove grease and grime. If detergent isn't fully rinsed out, towels remain alkaline, leaving fibers harsh. Citric acid, being acidic, neutralizes the alkalinity and restores fabric to a neutral condition, making it feel softer. Additionally, citric acid is odorless, so towels smell only of clean cotton.
How to Soften Towels with Citric Acid
To restore extremely stiff towels, the cleaning experts at Smol recommend a soak in the bathtub. Wear rubber gloves, dissolve a quarter cup of citric acid in half a bath of hot water, and stir until fully dissolved. Place towels in the mixture and soak for 15 minutes. Drain the bath, rinse towels with cold water, drain again, and wring them out. Then wash and dry as usual.
When laundering, avoid using too much detergent to prevent soap buildup that makes towels rigid and reduces absorbency. Also avoid laundry powder, as it doesn't fully dissolve and can settle in fibers, causing stiffness.
