Two readers have responded to George Francis Lee's account of giving up shampoo, sharing their own experiences with the 'no poo' method.
Positive experience: five years without shampoo
Paddy Eason of London says he has not used shampoo for at least five years. He explains his routine: "I rub my hair through in the shower every morning, and either towel or air-dry it. Every day is a now a good-hair day – mine is thick, glossy and easy to style, with a very slight waxy feel that comes with the natural oils that hair products are designed to strip away and then replace (badly)."
Eason adds, "I would only shampoo my hair now if I swam through something nasty in the sea or if a bird crapped on me."
Negative experience: greasy results, but a discovery
Kerri Thornton of Glasgow tried the 'no poo' method in 2012. "It was a turbo-hippy phase where I learned about the method from a man who had the most beautiful, luscious long hair, and he’d been doing this for 10 years. He washed his hair with water. So, convinced, I tried it."
Thornton lasted nine months, waiting for her hair to get the same texture. "It just remained greasy." However, she discovered sulphate-free and paraben-free shampoo, which she says "changed my life."
