Rhododendrons are a fantastic addition to any garden, providing vibrant colour and stunning floral displays during the summer months. However, to ensure they return year after year with equally impressive blooms, a simple post-flowering task is essential.
The Importance of Pruning After Flowering
Gardening expert Ish, known on TikTok as @ishgardening, has shared that the period immediately after flowering is crucial for rhododendron care. He explains that rhododendrons begin developing next year's flower buds in summer, so pruning too late can remove these future blooms.
Ish advises: "If your rhododendron has started flowering, that's incredibly exciting, but directly after its flowering is quite an important job. Rhododendrons, or rhoddy dendies as I call them, have these absolutely gorgeous spring flowers. There's an absolute abundance of them."
How to Prune Correctly
To promote vigorous growth and abundant flowers next spring, give your rhododendron a light prune as soon as the flowers fade. The key is to avoid cutting too much. Look along the stems for healthy buds, then trim just above them. Ish warns: "Avoid the temptation to prune down into the woody part of the stems, as you risk the flowers not growing back at all next year."
The Royal Horticultural Society confirms that rhododendrons generally require minimal pruning beyond removing dead wood and deadheading spent flowers where practical. In late winter, Gardeners' World experts recommend cutting away any dead or damaged wood while the plant is dormant.
Why Timing Matters
Pruning immediately after flowering preserves the buds that will bloom the following spring. Ish explains: "Rhododendrons start their flowering process from summer all the way through until next year. If you cut this at the end of summer, chances are you're cutting off all the buds that are ready to go in spring next year. So you want to make sure you preserve those."
By pruning early, you encourage new growth and even more flowers. "Get it done early, and as a result, it'll develop new growth and even more flowers, just like this one. So if you want beautiful flowers every year for your rhododendron, now you know what you're doing," Ish adds.
With this simple task, your rhododendrons will reward you with a spectacular display year after year.
