Microwave fried eggs in 30 seconds without a frying pan

Forget the frying pan: you can cook a perfect fried egg in the microwave in just 30 seconds, with less oil and almost no mess. The technique is quicker and healthier than the traditional pan method, with no smoke or crispy burnt bits around the edges.

It's a method the author's father used to swear by, and it turns out he wasn't alone. Cooking experts also recommend this way of making fried eggs.

The 30-second method

To make microwave fried eggs, spray or rub a little oil on a dish or deep plate. Then crack an egg into the dish. Take a knife and gently pierce the yolk - not enough to break it, but enough to stop it from exploding during cooking. Pop the dish into the microwave and cook on high for 30 seconds.

Leave the egg to stand for one minute, then check it. If you prefer it more well done, cook it in additional 10-second increments until it reaches your desired consistency. Then serve straight onto toast, bread or anything else you fancy - fuss-free.

A foolproof breakfast staple

One Sweet Appetite, a food blog, explains why this method is so popular: "Let me begin by saying, these Microwave Fried Eggs will truly change your life. You think I’m kidding, but I’m not! With just a one-minute cook time, they’ve become my son’s go-to breakfast he can make in the blink of an eye, no joke."

"At our house, we’ve been cooking eggs in the microwave for years. It’s actually one of our favourite methods. It’s pretty much hassle-free, totally foolproof and yields consistent results every time. On top of that, there’s little to no mess."
