A woman has shared her heartbreak after discovering her husband was having an affair with her best friend, who is also the godmother to their eldest daughter. The mother of two, aged four and one, wrote to advice columnist Coleen Nolan seeking guidance on how to cope with the betrayal.
Betrayal and Devastation
The reader explained that she felt betrayed and devastated, unable to sleep or eat properly while still caring for her daughters after her husband moved out. The couple are now together, and the woman has not spoken to her friend, fearing how she might react.
She noted that her husband has always had a wandering eye, but she never expected her friend to destroy her marriage and friendship. It has only been two months since he left, and he is already suggesting they 'get along' for the sake of the children, but she feels unable to do so.
Coleen's Advice
Coleen advised letting time pass, stating: 'It’s really tough, but my best piece of advice for now is to let some time pass. It’s only been two months since he moved out – he shouldn’t even be suggesting you all “get along”. You need time to process what’s happened.'
She urged the reader not to use the children to hurt her ex, as they will suffer most. Coleen shared a similar experience from a close friend and emphasised shielding children during divorce. She advised communicating with the ex about arrangements for the kids and recommended therapy for support.
Coleen concluded that while the reader never has to be friends with the other woman again, the intense feelings will fade. Eventually, she may be thankful for seeing her ex's true colors and moving on to a better relationship.
