A heating expert has revealed that a simple hot water bottle filled with cold water can keep your bedroom cool during hot weather without relying on a fan or air conditioning unit. John Lawless from BestHeating explained that the humble household item, typically used in winter, can serve as an effective and affordable cooling tool in summer.
How the Hot Water Bottle Cooling Hack Works
Fans and air conditioners circulate air to help sweat evaporate, but they do not actually lower the temperature of a room. In contrast, a hot water bottle filled with cold water absorbs heat directly from your body through a process of thermal transfer. Heat naturally travels from warmer objects to cooler ones, so placing the cold bottle against your skin draws warmth away, providing almost instant relief.
John Lawless said: "We've not gone mad. Hot water bottles are great insulators. This means that they can stay either hot or cold when you need it whatever time of year!" He added: "A good tip to keep your bed cool at night is to put your 'cold' water bottle under the sheets or next to your pillow in the evening. That means when you eventually get into bed it will be lovely and cool not hot and sticky."
Simple Steps to Use a Hot Water Bottle for Cooling
To use the hack, locate a hot water bottle and fill it with ice cubes, crushed ice, or chilled water straight from the fridge. Remove any cover before filling. Position the bottle against pulse points such as the neck, wrists, or ankles to accelerate the cooling effect. For overnight use, place it at the foot of the bed or near your pillow before sleeping. If the bottle feels uncomfortably cold, wrap it in a towel or pillowcase.
Safety Precautions for Freezing a Hot Water Bottle
Some people may consider putting the hot water bottle in the freezer, but this can be hazardous. Water expands when frozen, which may cause leaks or cracks in the bottle. If you choose to chill it in the freezer, limit the time to a maximum of 20 minutes. It is strongly advised not to fill a hot water bottle with frozen water.
This affordable and efficient method can help you stay comfortable during a heatwave without the need for expensive fans or air conditioning units.
