Cleaning experts have revealed a simple and cost-effective method to achieve a sparkling oven using just two common household ingredients: baking soda and white vinegar. Simon Exton, a cleaning specialist at AO.com, shared the eco-friendly hack as part of a series of tips to help households save money and reduce their reliance on chemical-laden commercial cleaners.
According to Exton, many people mistakenly believe that expensive cleaning products are necessary for a pristine home. However, he argues that store cupboard staples can be just as effective. For oven cleaning, he recommends creating a paste by mixing baking soda with two to three tablespoons of water. This paste should be spread over the inside of the oven and left for 12 hours, or preferably overnight.
After the paste has dried, it can be removed with a damp cloth. The next step involves spraying white vinegar onto the oven surface. The vinegar reacts with any remaining baking soda, producing a foam that helps lift grime. Finally, wiping down the oven with a cloth leaves it “brand-new shiny,” Exton said.
The expert also highlighted the environmental and financial benefits of using citric acid for dishwasher cleaning, noting that it is “considerably cheaper” than dedicated dishwasher cleaners. Citric acid, a naturally occurring substance, contains d-limonene which effectively cuts through grease. Simply fill the dishwasher tablet compartment and run a cycle for a sparkling result.
