As temperatures rise across the UK, many households are opening doors and windows to let in fresh air. However, this also invites pests like ants into homes. Fortunately, there is a simple, non-toxic way to keep them at bay using a common kitchen spice: cinnamon.
Why Cinnamon Works Against Ants
Cleaning expert Chantel Mila, known as Mama Mila on TikTok, recommends cinnamon as a natural ant deterrent. Cinnamon contains cinnamaldehyde, a compound that disrupts the chemical trails ants use to communicate and navigate. Without these trails, ants become disoriented and leave the area.
Nathan Kruger, owner of D-termination Pest Control, explains: “This aromatic spice acts as an olfactory deterrent, repelling ants without causing them immediate harm.”
How to Use Cinnamon to Repel Ants
Mix cinnamon powder with water in a spray bottle and apply the solution around windows, doors, and other entry points. You can also sprinkle ground cinnamon along ant trails, windowsills, and doorways. Alternatively, place cinnamon sticks in pantries, cabinets, or corners where ants gather.
TikTok creator Georgia, known as Clean with Georgia, suggests placing cinnamon sticks or oil at entry points. She says: “It’s a hot spice and they do not like it. This also deters ants as well, so it’s a great little hack.”
Additional Benefits of Cinnamon
Cinnamon is not only a pest deterrent but also has antibacterial and antifungal properties. It can be added to homemade cleaning solutions to neutralize odors and act as a natural disinfectant. Its pleasant aroma helps mask unwanted smells while keeping your home fresh.
This simple, eco-friendly method is safe for households with children and pets, as it does not involve harsh chemicals. By using cinnamon, you can enjoy a pest-free home without harming the environment or the insects.
